Gerard Valcin was born in 1923 in Port-au-Prince. He start painting in 1946 and he joined the Centre d'Art in 1959. He is the half-brother of the artist Pierre-Joseph Valcin and the uncle of Favrange Valcin, who paints under the name ValcinII. Valcin is considered one of Haiti's greatest painters. Valcin's paintings rarely come on the market today, and are treasured by serious collectors of Haitian art. His work has been exhibited throughout Europe and the United States, and is in permanent collections in museums all over the world. He died on May 15, 1988.
